hi folks im new to the fun of jeep and need help

i was given a jeep frame with running gear. the only id part was from the dash that said it was a kaiser 1969 dj5 and a tag that i think was gov or military that had warrente exspires (carnt read the date).
now this is where im confussed the running gear is a 4 cylinder with a t90 trans and t18 transfer case. the rear is a dana 41 and the front is a dana ?. the master cylinder for the brakes matched a 66 cj5 (i had to replace that) the 69 one had a threaded hole acording to the website which is why i used the 66.

ok now the questions
1/ wasnt a dj5 2 wheel drive?

2/ did the military use older parts on there jeep to reduce spare parts?

3/ the starter is 12v but for some reason only has 3 field coils ( the 4th is missing) what kinda starter do i need as there seems to be a problem with getting a cheap starter for a 4 cylinder where ever a 6 is cheap also the 66 and 69 seem to be diffrent. if i remember right the starter is a Autolite MDM-6005 and thats a 1966 part number.

4/ clutch rattles when disengaged it looks like the pressure plate is loose when the peddle is depressed. even when the clutch is dragging it starts to rattle so i can not adjust it out. (pushing clutch peddle to far down) isnt there meant to be springs that stops the pressure plate from rattling on the 3 bolts

i kinda welded a golf cart body to the frame and use it as a mud buggy so im always having to replace parts as i break them. i just need to know what parts fit..

thks

Re: hi folks im new to the fun of jeep and need help

hmmmm i didnt get to see what the jeep looked like before it was reduced to a frame. i have search in all the spots id numbers should be and can not find anything that i can read on the frame or engine. there is a tag on the engine that says "7" but all the other numbers are illegable. i just need a starter motor.

Re: hi folks im new to the fun of jeep and need help

every day i learn just a little more. i found the old dash board tag and it says "1969 dj5a" "L4T*3CID" *-is a number i can not work out.

thks for the responses so far but im unsure what a iron duke is. i think its a 2.5l 4 cyclinder. the fuel pump seems to be the same as a 134 military as it has the glass bowl on top of it. im thinking that this is a mutt and i guess if i carnt lift the engine number i will have to pull of the head cover to get the casting numbers.

as for learning......im well impressed with the jeep it went places today that the big f250's couldnt follow including fording a swamp that had places over 3' deep.

That should read L4-153CID if it's a dookie. Who knows what changes the PO did. 5 slot grill is DJ. The other Jeeps are 7 slot.

Re: hi folks im new to the fun of jeep and need help

lol maybe the t is a I so L4-153cid sounds like a winner. the grill isnt a dj (i went to the web sites that was surgested earlier in the post and the grill is a cj5 for sure...thanks for the link john). now im confussed alittle about the motor.....is it realy one side valve and one over head on the f-134 motor. the engine number near the water pump is T33486 which doesnt match any id numbers i could find on the net. i did find a site that says that dj5a was registered until 1972 but no records indicate that any was produced after 1968...hmmm...lol
i havent got the pictures of the motor yet as i seem to have misplaced the camera cable but i will post them as soon as i can.

It's a Jeep so chances are good someone swapped something along the way. There are many DJs running CJ titles and vice versa.

Re: hi folks im new to the fun of jeep and need help

The "Iron Duke" will have a flow through head, where the intake manifold will be on one side, the exhaust on the other. A f-134 will have the intake manifold built into the head and seperate exhaust, and the L-134 is a flathead. Since you mentioned it has a T90/Spicer 18, I'm willing to bet it's either an L134 of F134 . . .just a wild guess

the f134 was stock on many Kaiser jeeps from 50 until AMC bought Jeep in 71.

Re: hi folks im new to the fun of jeep and need help

:) intake is built into the head and the exsaust manafold is attacked to the engine block on the other side so f-134 it is.

my starter looks diffrent from yours john the coil pack is smooth it doesnt have the lump for the field coils.

thanks for your help guys

Re: hi folks im new to the fun of jeep and need help

still having trouble working this out. some web sites have the f-134 starter listed as between years 66-85 others list it as between 66-72 and others list as 67-69. will any f-134 starter fit as its a 9 tooth bendix 4-1/2 inch space between bolts and 1/2 bolts. i know the L has a diffrent fly wheel as does the v6 but did all the f-134 engines have the same fly wheel?

Re: hi folks im new to the fun of jeep and need help

i replaced the starter with a ebay recon i think its from a izuzi trooper. its a lot more modern and it engages with out the clunk worked great until i found a problem using this type while mudding. the drain hole is on the top...hmmm....i will take it to pieces this weekend and see if it can be rotated or i will drill a drain in the bottom and seal the top. doesnt look stock but then neither does my toy
i have got bigger wheels now (40" military) so i hope to keep things a little dryer because a alternator a week will become a problem when my friends run out of them..lol
i now search for everything based on the engine etc rather than the year....thks guys

Funny. The pic I posted was one from a '66 Nova, not a boat. The one you posted is in a FWD car.
