I need to to change my tranny fluid in my 95YJ - read that this Pennzoil syncromesh is the stuff to get.

2 Question:

Where can I find it? and....

Where exactly is the drain plug and fill plug for the tranny. - AX 15? Whatever the stock one is for the 95YJ. I really need to get this done, put off for too long.

Ok - 3 questions - does anyone know the capacity?

Thanks.

Your tranny is the AX5 since it's behind the 2.5L engine. AX15 is behind the 4.0L engine.

Capacity is about 3.5qts.

You can find Penzoil Synchromesh at AutoZone and other parts stores. It's okay but Redline MT90 is the best. It's synthetic which means shifting like warm butter even in the coldest of weather, and specially formulated to be easy on the soft brass synchronizers of the Aisin-Warner trannies. It's available at performance shops and www.summitracing.com .

Drain plug for the AX5 is on the bottom center of the transmission. Fill plug looks just like the drain plug 1/2 way up the driver's side of the transmission. Do not remove any plugs labeled 'Do Not Remove'.

Sorry for the hijack, but does anyone know if there were similar problems with the Peugot BA 10/5 trannies in the early YJ's?

Yes I know they are problematic and have a horrible reputation, but I was curious to see if this particular issue applied. I'm going to run one of the above, probably the MT90, in my '88 YJ

I've heard of some removing that plug with no consequences, haven't heard of any specific problems.

The Peugeot BA10/5 is not prone to the soft synchronizer problem like the AX5 and AX15, to my knowledge.

It's a mount for an internal part. I can't remember which part though. Dang it, now I'm curious and have to go look. Basically.....remove that bolt and get ready to learn alot about transmission rebuilding.

231 takes Dexron/Mercron auto tranny fluid, about 2qts or until it weeps out the fill plug.
