1995 wrangler Milage Problems

Hi Folks sure need some help. My daughter has a 95 wrangler with a 2.2ltr engine I belive. She lives in colorado at approx 8 thousand ft elev. normally gets about 20 to 21 mpg at home. She came back to missouri for a visit and the milage fell to 10 mpg, took it to a dealer and they checked it on the computer and said that it was alright, however they installed new plugs and cleaned the throttle body, well she started home and still 10 mpg, but the closer to her home and higer altitude the milage improved untill when she was at home back to normal or 20 to 21 mpg. Any help to solve this problem would be great she wants to come home for x-mass but not at 10 mpg, Thanks Jerry1940

It takes the 'puter a certain amount of warm-up cycles to fully recalibrate, I would call it good enough.

The 4banger in YJ's like your daughter's '95 is a 2.5L .

Another issue might be the speed involved in the drive to Missouri. Most folks try to drive as fast as they can through Kansas, Nebraska, and Oklahoma, so unless your daughter detoured to South Dakota or Texas, she probably burned 10 mpg at 120 mph.

Sorry, couldn't resist that one.

Seriously, though, my YJ gets between 22 and 25 mpg when driven at or below 55 mph. When Sunshine and I went to MS last month, I got between 12 and 15 mpg because it was mostly highway driving at 70 mph and above. I would guess that your daughter gets her normal 20 mpg around town and on 55 mph roads, right? I could be totally wrong on that, but that would certainly add to the equasion of the computer/air density factor mentioned above.

It seems that there was an unknown factor at work with this problem. Unaware of a broken manifold bolt, which left a gap between the block. Local dealer in Longmont ( nice friendly place) is convinced that once the manifold problem is repaired things will change, sure hope so, and yes I know that kansas is flat I grew up there. Actually a nice place to live, friendly people reasonable housing and affordable taxes and food supplys. Many thanks again for your input.

How do you guys figure MPG? My gas needle doent work right, is there another way? I might as well ask, do i have to replace the gas tank to fix the needle? it moves but it stops at 1/4 even if there is no gas in the tank. And today it said i have 7/8th of a tank and i still put in 11 gal of gas in there and toped it of.

Pretty simple, really. Make a note of your odometer reading when You fill up, then the next time you fill up, divide the miles travelled by the gallons in the tank. My gas guage isn't very accurate either, since I did the 15 to 20 gal tank mod, but when I know I'm getting around 20mpg, I watch the odometer and fill up between 350 and 375 miles.

Ha! i think the previuse owner did this mod, i can full up more then 15gal in my tank. can i go back and undo this mod?

Well, I suppose you could, but why? All you'd need is a vent hose that's 10" long and put it back in the filler neck.

I wouldnt worry about it, I had the whole unit replaced and it didnt make any difference on the fuel guage it still stopped at 1/4. After I did the 15 to 20 Gal mod I just use the trip meter, its simple and I dont have to fill up as often.
