Gave upi the Jeep Bug
For what? something more dangerous and about the same in expenses.
They say Spend your money to become Certified, never regain it afterwards.
Sounds like a Jeep doesn't it. :)

Re: Gave upi the Jeep Bug
Dude, you can do both you don't have to give up jeepin for scuba. I got certified back in 81 and loved it the few times I've been able to go on a trip. I haven't been very often but at least try to snorkle if I can't go diving when on a cruise.
Good to see you around again by the way.

Re: Gave upi the Jeep Bug
Dude you don’t have to sacrifice the jeep or the share air part! Both are very compatible. I have let my jeep take me to some wonderful dive spots in Arizona, California, Utah and Mexico. Not only has she taken me there she has also carried the gear closer to the water than any ones else’s ride and that means a lot when your carrying two “80 cube’s”.
I am a PADI Rescue diver; I have held my “C” card since 84.
Yes it’s an expensive hobby, but let’s be realistic here, do you really need to own your own BCD? Regulators? 2.1mm,8.0mm wet suit and a dry suit for those really cold dives?
I can see owning your own gear if you plan on doing it a lot. I do own my own regulators and dry suit. BUT god help me if I change weight!
Realistically how much diving are you really going to be doing each year?
Your regulators have to be serviced every 5 years, not even counting your dive computer! Tanks go in every year, and a major inspection every 5. Trust me here it’s a whole lot easier to rent those, and the rest of your big buy dive gear the first few years till you know how much your going to be diving. You should buy your own mask, fins, even a padded pouch type of weight belt if you want comfort.
But the rest, wait and see. Where ever you go there will be a dive store just wanting to rent you a set of reg’s and BCD cheap.
I own most of my equipment but it has taken me 20 years (finding the specialty gear on sale), I still let the local stores own the tanks, 8 bucks to rent or 5 to fill. You do the math.
But there is nothing like a long day in the mountains 4 wheeling and a cool dip in a local lake with a spear gun to shoot dinner. Just call when your in need of a dive partner.

have had my Card since 99. renting is the way to go. only thing I own are the wet suits since i use them for Kayaking in the cold months also. Kayaking is expensive also, esp since I own just about everything I need for it, but hey, Scuba, Jeepin, and Kayakin all complement each other. It's all about getting out in your Jeep and enjoying Nature. Jeep does most of the work getting there. I to have been able to get my yak/gear, even scuba gear to more secluded and beautiful spots to stage, thanks to the Jeep. It's a Win Win situation with the Jeep.

Re: Gave upi the Jeep Bug
Scuba is great I've been certified for over ten years. Unless you have several people also involed with you and you plan on alot of trips renting is the way to go. I have two tanks I'll sell you cheap. My local dive shop rents full tanks for $5, $3 for a fill of yours then add a visual every year and a hydro every 5 mine are sitting in the basement. The only thing I keep buying is my mask and regulator everything else most dive places rent cheap and the stuff is well serviced

Re: Gave upi the Jeep Bug
Nah, still have the TJ Prolly going to have that for years to come. Just not working on building her anymore.
I dive about once every other week. I have gathered my own gear because within a year the cost of rental would have been way more.
I Traded my Old XJ for a Regulator and computer setup. Sold my black rims and mudders. I don't doubt I'll do something with it later but for right now I am trying for Instructor :) as a Retirement option.
I love diving, the first time I inhaled while under the water it was all over. I find myself just laying on the bottom staring up through the water. I can't explain the feeling. It is my calling.
I did my first Open water Dive in September on the 10th since then I have 6 more certifications :) Adventure, Advanced, and 4 specialties including Deep, Navigation, bouyancy and search and recovery. working on rescue diver and Dive master gotta get a few more dives in. I am aobut 1/2 way to 50 already. I have a Quarry that is 20 min away that is for Diving fun fun let me know if anyone wants to come to ATL and go Diving.

Re: Gave upi the Jeep Bug
Wow, well I can say you would always have a job as a diver and always got the jeep to be like "I'M TEH SEXY DIVER!!"
And I would say that feeling your getting is the same I get when under water or atleast in the Ocean. I love the ocean, I'll go diving, boogy boarding, and swimming the ocean but I sure as hell won't go into a lake and swim.

Re: Gave upi the Jeep Bug
I got certified in '89. It's been a while since I've been diving, I need to take a refresher course. I was never SAR certified, but last time I went was to pull a body out of a pickup when I was in EMS. The last time before that was to help a buddy pull a Harley Sportster out of a sand pit on his property that had been stolen and dumped. Our ex-police chief and I used to go about once a month to a spot in MO called Captain Dave's Blue Water Dive Spot or something like that. An old zinc pit set up for diving. It had cars, boats, an airplane, and a few other cool things under the most clear, deep sky blue water I'd ever seen. My favorite thing to do was to get completely neutral bouyancy and just hang in the water head down.....very relaxing!

Re: Gave upi the Jeep Bug
WOW!! Maybe if there is ever another "Jeepz" weekend we can all take our Dive gear also. :) Then again Diving then scaling a mountian to get the Bends doesn't sound very fun at all. HA!! Yes I have my Peak Performance Bouyancy specialization and hanging head down for 2 min was something I had to do. I have my bouyancy down to a science now. I can adjust my level with only the air in my lungs. I feel like a fish with an air bladder. Quite fun to be at 40 feet then flare out like you are sky diving and breathe out and descend to 45 feet and see the fish you are scoping out just to take a deep breath and stop yourself at a precise location.
Any of you come Atlanta way there is a Quarry here to dive in now. they just opened it this year. Usually about 15-25 feet vis.

Re: Gave upi the Jeep Bug
You can't Jeep AND dive. It's one or the other.
