Ford Explorer Sporttrac

I know it's not a beloved Jeep but I thought maybe one of you experienced guys can guide me in the right direction. Here's the issue. I try to use the heat and it's sporadic. I can toggle the temp dial and that sometimes will help. It will blow warm air for about 30 seconds and then turns cold and if I move the temp gauge slightly, it sometimes will heat again. I also noticed it tends to blow warm heat continous while I am driving down the highway. But in stop and go traffic it's sporadic. Thank god I have the XJ to drive on these cold days lately. Thanks for any help. I really don't want to take it to the dealer this time of year.

Try changing the thermostat. It may be stuck open.

Sounds like your blend doors are not operating correctly. Possibly a vacuum leak somewhere.

Did you recently service your coolant system? You might have a pocket of trapped air in your heater core. You can try parking it on a hill with the front facing up hill and removing the rad cap. Let it run with the heater wide open so the pocket of air works itself up and out the open rad. I had to do this to a previous vehicle and it took almost half an hour before it worked itself out.
