Reports: GM in talks to buy Chrysler Group
Sources say the No. 1 automaker may buy DaimlerChrysler's struggling auto unit, according to reports.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- General Motors is in talks to buy DaimlerChrysler AG's struggling Chrysler Group in its entirety, according to several reports.

According to the reports, sources in Germany and the United States said high-level talks between GM (down $0.14 to $36.30, Charts) and DaimlerChrysler (up $2.83 to $73.08, Charts) executives are taking place.
Chrysler, which has already announced plans to close plants like this one in Newark, Del., and cut 13,000 jobs, could be sold to rival General Motors, according to published reports.

CNN's Ali Velshi has details of Daimler Chrysler's restructuring plan. (February 14)


Its German parent confirmed Wednesday it is looking at strategic options for the North American unit. When asked if those options included a sale or spin-off of the unit, DaimlerChrysler Chairman Dieter Zetsche responded "this means all options are on the table."

Chrysler Group announced Wednesday it would be cutting about 13,000 workers and closing plants over the next three years as a part of a restructuring plan aimed to restore profits by next year.

Talks of an alliance between GM and DaimlerChrysler was first reported recently in Germany's Manager-Magazin.

Yes. Ugly...all of them. The first roadster is okay. The Corvette isn't ugly but pretty boring considering what they could have done.

It's not like we need race tuned suspension here. What most of us here look for is off-road capabilities.
When the Blazer first came out it was a very capable machine, but now? IFS with a heavy 4.3L bolted to a very weak trans...
In the off-road market the GM group just doesn't compete, shoot it has taken them over 10 years to even try to enter any of the off-road races. (Hummer H3 in the Dakar)
Now in sports car class the GM group has always had the Vette and the Camaro, the Saturn and the Caddie are late comers riding the shirt tails of "retro muscle car" wave.

We have all gone through buy outs already (DC). If it happens things might look up for our beloved Jeeps, if not then our consumer dollars will tell the higher ups that they "F" up the jeep and they will try again to get it right.
Look at the Rubicon...DC did a good job producing that Jeep.

I wish I could but nope, no way, I'll finally finish paying monetarily for the GM mistake in early 2009; the only way I'll ever own another GM is if they start giving them away.

I had never even owned anything but a GM nor wanted to, and they burned me. After I ditched the Jimmy we bought DC and Ford and neither has had a spec of trouble. I even had a CJ5 that had rolled off a cliff and was so badly warped we cut the spring perches off and welded new ones to the frame where they "wanted" to go, it's pretty bad when a new vehicle is less reliable than a 20 year old vehicle thats rolled down a cliff and is generally unsafe at any speed.

If I were a rich man I would have given that truck a viking funeral and then dumped its molten tangled carcass on GM's front lawn

I'd get rid of it now and trade it off. Even if you are upside down on the note, just get it traded off or sell it outright. I wouldn't put myself through it sounds like what you've been though over a vehicle.

We did 3 years ago, they could not fix it so we had no other option. We were upside down 6K and had spent 7K on repairs and rental cars through the ordeal, the 6K went on the loan for the Ford and the 7K languished on a credit card. So I guess if you look at it as the first 6K that gets paid off on the new loan it's gone already, but I can't help but look at it as the last 6K

So the tab is:
Crappy '98 Jimmy (including 4 years interest): 29,000
Upside down cash (including interest through the following loan): 9,700
Repairs on CC (plus interest over 3 years): 10,300
Total: $49,000 for 4 years use of a moderately equipped GMC Jimmy

Not driving a GMC... Priceless...

And I also list as examples the Buick Rendezvous (why would you take the already ugly Aztec and sell it under another brand too???), the Cobalt, the new Tahoes, everything Hummer, the SSR, the HHR, the Avalanche, both Malibus and the minivans with the same ugly front end, the Vibe and the Vue.

If it makes you feel any better I think along the same lines for Chrysler, Ford, and the foreign companies too. But GM was the one in question here And these are just my opinions, take'em or leave'em, I won't get my feelings hurt
