tranny question 4.0L and 4.2L

does anyone know if the 4.2L (258 ) will accept the 4.0 tranny? was told it would work, but would like to make sure before i try to get one. OR- my 258 has a tranny in good working order but has a transfer case (that can be unbolted) and i need it to be 2wd.... is there a 2wd tailshaft i can get for it? ive been told its a mopar tranny so maybe the 727 or 904?
i'm learning all this, new to the mechanical stuff.....
THANKS!!
josh

The trannies interchange between those two engines, and for an automatic, you have to find a 2wd tranny.
