Oil Pump Noise?

1994 jeep Cherokee,

My jeep is now in the hands of my of my third teenager! She brings it home saying it's over heating. I fixed the over heating problem with a faulty radiator cap that was leaking and I thought I was in the clear but I hear a "lifter" type noise now. Not all the time though. It sounds like I'm low on oil, that's why I say that but it's not like it's coming from all the lifters, L6 , evenly if that makes sence.

So, I started hunting for the source more intensely and crawled under the jeep today and I swear it sounds like the noise is coming from within the oil pan.

Can oil pumps make that kind of noise while contributing to a bad circulation problem that might make me think that or did I fall a sleep and pull a rip van wrinkle and dream it all when I was under the Jeep today.

Really, perplexed because it's a loud noise.....

thanks,

HH

God, do I feel for you!!!

I'm no help here, but my '03 Wrangler has been making a "lifter-type" noise for about 2 years now. Once it warms up, it all goes away, so I don't worry too much about it, but it's always in the back of my mind. Noises from the oil pan would worry me. Maybe we both should get us a wooden dowel and start stickin' it around the motor and to our ears...............maybe get a little better idea of just WHERE that sound is comin' from.

Sorry I can't be of more help,
mechanically challenged mud

Re: Oil Pump Noise?

I actually did grab a wooden hammer and tried listening around. I probably should try a dowel or hose. I do audio recording, so I was intrigued with the sounds I heard of the moving parts. However, the noise I heard coming from the oil pan acoustically (no hammer) was not the same as the movement I heard via the hammer. But I don't know the significance of that because I can come up with way too many technical reasons to explain how the sound could have be altered by the medium...

Hmmmm, maybe I should attach an mp3 of the sound, I bet some of the more experienced folks could tell in a heartbeat what the noise is. However, it looks like I have to rename the file in order to post it, then whom ever wanted to listen to it would have to rename it back to an mp3 extension in order to hear it...

Might start a new trend...

thanks,

HH
