exhaust

my jeep spits black carbon colored water out of the tailpipe. i know the water is normal but is spits it out black! I think it may be dirty combustion chambers that cause the sooty exhaust. any ideas would be much appreciatted

Take it for a ten mile run up the interstate. Check a couple of plugs, if they are black and sooty could be running rich. Exhaust doens´t mean much, happens often with alot of short trip driving.[addsig]

89 Wrangler? Try the O2 sensor. Could cause your rich/lean problems burning too much crap. Will eventually eat up your cat. converter. I have an 89 and found that there is a recall on the 89 for the O2 sensor. The dealership punched in my VIN and found this. I got it replaced for free.

Buy a can of "SeaFoam" at the autoparts store (Napa around here) and follow the instructions on the can for sucking it into the engine through a vacuum source like the brake booster vacuum. This stuff works great for cleaning the combustion chamber, valves, and catalytic converter.

i spit that black gunk out my exhaust as well...however it only does this for 2-3mins or until it is slightly warmed up. it isnt really that big of a problem to me...i always just assumed that my cat was bad...that will be either hoolowed out or gotton rid of altogher as we do not have emission test here in canada..at least were i live...about that recal..i also own an 89 wrangler inline 6....will they replace my O2 sensor if i go to the dealer ship>>. thanks chris[addsig]

west, i dunno. you can call the dealership and give them your VIN number and they could tell you if there are any outstanding recalls. But if you're getting rid of your cat, well, then who cares about the O2 sensor. It just tells the computer how much to mix the air and the fuel to get the right amount for optimal combustion.



ps. i sent you an email about your suspension setup. did you get it? if not here it is in a nutshell. how well does the 4" suspension lift and longer shackles work? do you have a slip yoke eliminator and cv driveshaft, or does a transfer case drop kit work well enough to get rid of the vibrations? thanks for any advice you have.
