I decided the other day that I want about a 1 to 2 inch lift on my jeep. Before I had never really wanted too, but now that ive seen the light im all about it. How do I go about buying a lift? How much should I expect, where should I go, what kind should I get? How do I go about installing a lift? Im not all that mechanically inclined to be able to do this on my own. How do you find a shop that will do something like this? 3rd if I put the jeep up 1 to 2 inches how big should I go on tires. I dont want to put mudders on, I still need my jeep to much for the road right now, but I think id want to put something bigger on. Also how differently does a jeep handle on and offroad with a lift. Is it not as safe on the highway lets say with a lift on it?
By the way its a 98 TJ se 4 cycl.

Ok, your going to want to get a suspension lift i'm assuming, so expect to pay (for a 2.5in lift) about 250-400 dollars, depending on what brand you buy. I'd recommend companies such as Rancho, Superlift, Black Diamond, Rubicon Express, or Rough Country. Most people consider Skyjacker the best, but it is VERY expensive and it sounds like you don't want to spend TOO much. as far as installing it, you could do it yourself. However, you'd want to have someone help you who has done it before. If you want to take it somewhere, just about any 4WD shop will do them, but they WILL charge you a good bit to do it. I'd suggest that you have a friend who's done it before help you, that way you can learn how to do it, and you can brag that you did it yourself :-D oh, and with a 2.5 in. lift, 31in. tires would probably fit nicely

TJ = 31's will fit stock

He probably could almost fit 33's with 2.5inches of lift. Getcha some spring spacers...they are really cheap and I think go up to 2" or maybe a little more. They work by going between the coil spring and the axle thus raising the jeep and still keeping your same springs. Now if you want to get into serious shiza you can go for a complete kit which would include longer coils and control arms...those can net you anywhere from 4.5, 5.5, 6, and even 8 inches of lift or more. Enough lift to comfortably fit even 37inch tires with no body trimming.

With longer control arms and progressive springs(the gaps in the coils gradually get bigger) a nice ride is still possible (unlike a YJ which would need a springover with lift springs + body lift to clear such meats without trimming)

However that requires many other mods (axles, gears, drivetrain, etc) I think that a 2" spacer lift with some 31's would be sweet and you would still have some power from your 4 banger. 33's with only 4 squirrels is pushing it.
