Mine is a wierd one with 3 conections. It has either one in and two out or vicaverca. Have not crawled under to try and locate it yet so this is a great question for me too. Mine is an 87 YJ 4 Banger. Tug[addsig]

Ok, I'm not sure everyone is talking about the same thing. I know YJ's differ somewhat, but I have 89 YJ 4cyl. and my fuel filter has one line in, one line out. It is located on the inside of the driver's side frame rail back near the rear upper shock mount. It's kind of a pain to work with, but you will manage. It's held in place by a metal strap with a screw. Oh, and have some 1/4inch plugs on hand or you will get gassed on. There will be a couple of ounces of gas in the filter too, so have a drain pan near by. Let me know if you have more questions. I change mine out about once a year.

Chances are that it will be located in the tank. I have an old chiltons guide from when I had my YJ, I will check it out and let you know.[addsig]

I'm pretty sure that it is located in the tank. I may even go as far as to say it is part of the fuel pump, but I'm not too sure of that. I was thinking of replacing the fuel filter on my 95 , but the Hayes manual states that it is in the tank, and it is part of the fuel pump or maybe it was the sender. Somebody clear things up for us.[addsig]

A fuel filter in the tank? That would suck.

Okay, I am looking at my Hayes Manual and here the deal on Fuel filters:On 95 and earlier models, they us an in-line fuel filter. The filter is located is located on the left side frame rail, near the fuel tank. and 97 and later models, the fuel filter is in the TANK! that has got to suck! Thanks goodness I have got a YJ. If you need the proceedure, let me know, and I'll post it for you.-Al[addsig]

Yeah, on my 93 yj 4.0... the filter is a 1in/1out inline filter near the upper shock mount on the driver side, with a metal strap holding it on there... I no longer use a screw/bolt to hold it in due to rust reasons... i change it once or twice a year... every time i do, it empties out BLACK gas... probably from the nasty tank... I have to drop that some day and clean it out. I use a strong zip tie that I cut off every time I change it... its a lot easier than messing with rusted bolts that round off every time. when you put it on, it has arrows to show flow direction... it costs me $9 every time, not a bad idea to do every year.... sorry TJ owners, if you ever have to change yours, I'd suggest removing it and converting to inline on the frame[addsig]

sweeet, K K PSI and Snitty thanks for the conformation! I didn't even think of looking along the frame rails underneath, and I'm glad it's not in the tank. Now I gotta get the filter, I hate pepboys... Thanks guys!

WHAT!?! DID YOU NOT READ MY POST?! I specifically told you where it was! Geez. I was the 4th post and it took 12 before you believed... I know my YJ is an 89 but it is fuel injected, and I do know what I'm talking about. The only filter type of thing in the tank on our YJ's is a fuel sock/strainer that is like a mesh fitting around the end of the pump/sending unit to pre-filter any debris from your tank. Then it gets fed to the in-line filter [which I descriptively told you about in post #4 on this thread] which is then fed to the fuel injector in the engine bay.

No respect,

C :-x

:-O Sorry there big C! I just assumed your YJ wasn't fuel injected since 91 was the first year they put the FI engines in the wranglers. (engine swap?) anyway sorry I didn't directly acknowledge your post, but I must say that I take every response seriously, especially to my posts, and I read every one! I only singled out K K PSI and Snitty cause I knew they had a YJ that was fuel injected. THANKS FOR YOUR POST HI C... YOU WERE RIGHT BEFORE ANYONE ELSE. There, is that better? [addsig]

Thanks, Joopin. It's all good. I wasn't really mad, I was just surprised. However, my YJ came from the factory with a 2.5L and fuel injection. I think that 91 was the first year that they offered fuel injection with the 6cylinder engine. Not 100% on that, but I know that Fuel Injection was available on the 4cylinders pre-91. No big deal though. I've been under my jeep so many times I can start doing some things with my eyes closed. I've replaced everything but the axles, engine and the frame. 2 transmissions, 3 starters, 2 power steering pumps, 2 water pumps, 1 radiator, 1 exhaust manifold, etc. etc. It's practically brand new! ha. Keep on Joopin, or Jeepin.
