Okay, I have a 1992 Jeep Cherokee Sport. It is a 5 - speed manual transmission and i wanted to convert it to an automatic transmission. I don't do any offroading or rough driving with it just lots of city driving. I was just wondering it anyone could just tell me how much this would cost and what i would need to do it. Oh and one more thing could i use an automatic tranny out of older laredo, would that work?

thanks

Hi,

In order to switch from standard to Auto some of the things that would have to be done during the swap are:

1) Install transmission cooler by radiator and run fluid lines
2) Install transmission control unit, resistor pack, etc.
3) Make modifications to the starting circuit.
4) Modify the backup lamp circuit, cruise control circuit, etc.
5) Install different (4-pin) Throttle Postition Sensor
6) Install transmission pwr/comfort mode switch

As you can tell, most of the above is electrical stuff. Maybe someone can fill you in on the mechanical end of things

The autos are generally longer, so you may need to move the tranny mount rearward, as well as needing different length driveshafts. Make sure the auto has the same output shaft as the manual, or it won't mate to your transfer case.
