Wheel Bearing Maintenace? Other high-mile maintenance?

I've got a '94 cherokee sport that now has 120k miles on it. It had 65k when I bought it in '96. It's pretty well just used on high way and around town (which includes a lot of snow & salt in the winter) and occasionally (3-4 time a year) on a dirt/rock road.



I'm curious about what maintenance ("preventive medicine") I should have done to it, to help it keep running into the future.



How often (or should) the wheel bearings be re-packed, for example?

Actually you should have CV jointed axles in the front. Unless a boot splits, they are pretty much maintenance free. With the many miles, change the fluids in the front and rear diffs, transfer case, tranny (what doesn't leak out lol) and have an sgine flush done. It removes most or all of the gunk build-up inside the motor.[addsig]

Anything special to do for the rear axels/wheels?



-- The reason I'm particularly paranoid about that is because I had a friend who had one of his rear wheels (inlcuding axel still attached) come right of his cherokee while on the freeway - which caused a lot of excitement if you can imagine!



If I remember right, he said it had something to do with bearings. [addsig]

The rear bearings are lubed internally by the diff. Just change the fluid once in a while, check the axle seals for leaks and all is honky dory.[addsig]

pick up a service manual... the whole first chapter of my haynes' manual goes over preventative maintenence... filter changes, tune up stuff, etc... that's what i did when i just got my jeep (w/ 142xxx miles) and just went through that chapter[addsig]
