Hello All,

As you can tell, I am new, and up until a week ago drove a Ford Bronco II. Now now, it did very well in the snow, and got me out when others were stuck. But, I have moved up in the world, I just bought a 1992 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4dr 4x4 and I love it! That 4.0 is a peppy little engine! One thin I noticed though (after I bought it) is that the badge on the tailgate says 4.0 Liter High Output. Is there any way to tell if it really is an HO?? Thanks for the help, hope to be a regular![addsig]

and is the "HO" designation just a marketing thing or is there actually a difference?[addsig]

I had an '84 Camaro Z28 HO, and the HO definatly made a difference, beleive it was diff or larger Carb and some others...not sure on the Jeep, and have no idea how to tell. Should there be a code somewhere, on the engine?[addsig]

The high output engines have different throttle bodies, and even bolt on differently.

this gives them the extra 5-10hp? i think it is. [addsig]

The HO versions were on the EFI 4.0litre engines. The head was reworked for better flow and the exhuast header is also different. Besides the top half of the motor, the blocks are all basically the same. If there isn't a badge on it that states high output then it more than likely is not the HO 4.0litre. I believe the official HP numbers were like 180 nonHO and 190 HO.[addsig]

So is there something, a marking or such, that will tell me that this is indeed an HO? There is a badge on the liftgate that says 4.0L High Output...but badges can be swapped...[addsig]

You could run your vin with the dealer or have them check the tag for the HO code. Or find the id number on the head and have that compared to the HO. The dealer should be able to give you the code to compare to your vehicle id tag.[addsig]

Yeah, I ran the VIN on one of those online Jeep VIN decoders, everything came up ok except for the Check Digit and the Engine Code, not sure if it was meant for CHerokee's though. The dealer is a squib, he just repeats himself "The ride is smooth because I balanced the tires!" What a dip****. [addsig]

I wondered the same thing about my 1999 cherokee (HO or NOT?) After running the VIN number Through CARFAX I found that the engine was in fact the High Output 4.0 even though it did not have the "high output" badge on it (although it does say 4.0L on the back and is a Sport model). Like someone said in an earlier reply, I think that the 4.0L high output engines may have been in all the cherokees (outfitted with 6cyl engines of course) after a certain year.[addsig]
