Can somebody tell me if the rear axles in a 2000 XJ had a Limited slip option? If so, how could I tell if I have one? I've got a hitch that looks like it was from an original tow package.

I think the tow package had a chrysler rear end instead of a d35. Check that to see if you have the package or not. I don't know about the LSD.

Check the end of the axletube just behind the brake backing plate, should be a blue tag wrapped around the axle tube. This will tell you the axle type, diff type, and gear ratio. Let us know what you found.

Jeep used the Chyrsler 8.25" rear axle in tow packages in the late '90s, but stopped sometime around '00 or '01 and used the D35 for some strange reason.

Cool - It says Jeep 8.25 open 3.55
I was hoping for a LS, and 3.55 gears aren't ideal either, but I am glad to see it at least has a heavier axle under there. I guess the hitch was from a factory towing package.
Thanks Bounty! I was looking for a metal plate around the diff cover like my old one. One thing though, that tag was white and red (not that it matters).

The Chrysler 8.25" is a good axle, and there are factory limited slip diffs (Tracloc) out there if you wanted to search 'for sale' forums on the web. 3.55 is the most common, not a bad ratio. Could be worse, could be 3.07

Our '98 XJ had the exact same package, it also has an external tranny cooler from the factory. Be sure to tow in 3rd.

I would think I have one too, but I'll check. Towing in 3rd. Gotcha.
