Anothey Mysterious Ticking Question
I intermittently hear a ticking sound, almost like crickets. It comes and goes and I hear it in the front and rear passenger. When the jeep is in idle I can sometimes hear clicking from the front of engine (engine fan??) and my best guess is that it resonates through the tail pipe. The tail pipe comes out on the rear passenger side. Is it typical that the clutch fan makes a ticking sound when it starts to go bad? Any other ideas?
The sounds dont increase or decrease with acceleration therefore I was ruling out an exhause leak. I know I need new tires but if sound was coming from from them I think it would be more consistent. I am not sure what to check for next. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
Dave

Re: Anothey Mysterious Ticking Question
Just remember this.
Listen for a pattern. A mechanical pattern. A rattling cat converter will be random.
Anything that is a timed tick , tick, tick, with engine rpm is mechanical in nature.

Re: Anothey Mysterious Ticking Question
This is completely random and I hear no change in tick speed as I accelerate. It almost sounds like crickets when it happens. But this morning I didnt hear it until I almost got into work.

Re: Anothey Mysterious Ticking Question
crickets... it sounds to me that an exhaust component or a bracket of something is loose and squeeking against something else.

Re: Anothey Mysterious Ticking Question
The sound a CV joint makes is described as "angry sparrows" under the Jeep when the one in the front driveshaft starts going bad.

I think his jeep is a solid front axle.
