I have a 99 Grand Cherokee w/Selec-Trac, N-242, and it does not want to shift out of part time fwd. When shifting to 2wd or full time 4wd if stayes in part time. After reading throught this site and others it looks like there are 3 clips on a fork in the transfer case that have broken. Does anyone have any insights or links I can go to that would explain how to replace these clips or is this something that should be left to a professional mechanic?

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the Z.

The only clips I can think of are the 3 plastic friction pads on the range fork and mode fork. They will wear out under low fluid or contaminated fluid conditions.

If you've never had a transfer case apart, it's best left to a mechanic or to have somebody help you that has had a similar transfer case apart before.

I have a 242 for sale, near St. Louis, if it is of any help. If you're close I could also help rebuild yours.

Thanks for the info. I found a used case at a local salvage yard.

I did forget to add that when I drained the fluid there were fragments of plastic in the fluid.

Thanks again
