fuel pump install??

do i have to drop the fuel tank to replace the fuel pump on a 1989 xj?? it looks like you can get it out with out dropping the tank. if this is possible the will be very nice and way less time consuming..

Re: fuel pump install??

My 89 SJ has an access panel under the carpeting.

Perhaps the XJ has one as well?

If not, why not make one?

Re: fuel pump install??

unfortunately you will need to drop the tank out. Haynes say so as does a friend of mine who used to be a technician at a dealership.

wouldn't fancy trying to cut a hole in the floor in the right place though, and would do it properly

yes, you don't need to drop the tank. just turn out the retainer ring and turn the pump sideways when pulling it out.

Re: fuel pump install??

skullfisher is right, you don't need to drop the tank or cut a hole in the floor. regardless of what haynes says the job can be done with it in the jeep. a lifted xj is easier(8'' of lift preferrable) you can literally sit on your but and do it. trust me been there done that x2
