How do I do a engine check

I`m trying to get to the bottom of a warm start up misfire on my 99 4.0 ltd and would like to do a engine check.I ran the car to working temp, left it for 20 min then restarted and got usual rough running then turned the car off.I pressed my mileage reset button whilst I turned the key to the click that puts dash info up.The mileage numbers went through a series of count ups starting with all ones through to all nines then back to zero, the gauges and rev counter were going up and down as well. When the odeometer got to zero there were no other numbers came up.Am I doing the check correctly, if I had any codes when would they come up?Presuming I`ve done the check right anyone got any ideas? Thanks Haighy

Sounds like you released the trip button too early, hold it until you turn the ignition back off and then release.

If that doesn't work, have the codes scanned with an OBDII scanner at the local parts store.

Sounds like the common 'injector heat soak' problem.
