1995 Cherokee Questions

I just bought a 1995 Cherokee for $400. After driving it home I found that the gears were popping out. I asked a friend and he said that the sync are going. 2nd is completely gone. What I am asking is if there is a way to make this a automatic, I really hate manual and if not is there any other make that uses the same tranny so I can get this thing replaced before I really screw it up? Please help. My hubby knows nothing about this car.

Re: 1995 Cherokee Questions

You can make it an auto with junkyard parts, The Jeep AW4 Transmissions - Novak Conversions is the auto tranny that came in that model jeep. You need the transfer case with it, or change the input shaft on your current transfer case to match the output of the auto.

You also need the tranny computer and related wiring, possibly the ECM and the TPS wiring for an auto.

It's a lot of work, would be best if you picked up an auto XJ that needed parting out and could have it on hand for the swap.

Re: 1995 Cherokee Questions

wish I could find a $400 XJ...

Your trans is either the AX-5 for the 2.5 or the AX-15 for the 4.0
YJ's have them and they are more plentiful then XJ's with 5 speeds.

Re: 1995 Cherokee Questions

Trannies in XJ's and YJ's are slightly different, the YJ clocks the transfer case up higher than it is in the XJ.
