1987 Cherokee 4.0 overheating

I have just in the last week had a problem with the car overheating. When I open the hood, the cap on the reserve tank of coolant is leaking. I bought a new cap and it is still leaking and overheating. the car only overheats when the cap is leaking. Do I need a new reservoir tank too? Could it be something else? The radiator was cored two years ago. The car ran just fine up until this week.

Help

I would get a new cap and tank, and make sure the coolant system is properly bled of air by parking nose down and removing the temp sensor at the back of the head. Then fill until coolant comes out that hole.

Here's a write-up for what Bounty described: Jeep Cherokee Engine Cooling System - Burp Air System - Modification

P.S. It's a Jeep, not a car!
