a few XJ 87 questions.

Hi there,

anyone have a photo of the roof without the felt liner?

were all the models wired for speakers even if speakers weren't put in the hatch?
if so where does the speakers run from. I have yet to take apart my hatch but i have took off the top corner metal bracket on both sides to find no wire.

do any other taillight guards fit or could be made to fit without a torch?
as these guards seem pretty hard to find. ive been looking at land rover discovery ones...

anyone know of a bush guard that has similar mountings to fit on a jeep if it wasn't designed for a jeep (Land Rover, Toyota, etc)

Is waag the only one that makes brush guard with the bars that cover the headlights?

Thanks.

Re: a few XJ 87 questions.

Here is a partial 88 XJ schematic it may be helpful, it is likely close to or the same as the 87. I've found many wires present for various options (that were never installed), but sometimes you have to go back in the harness to the last connector to find them, sometimes not. It's likely the harness with the speaker wires runs behind the side panel, behind the spare tire in the cargo area, then up to the top and into the hatch (all of my XJ's have come with the rear speakers, I never needed to back trace the wires completely). While your in the hatch lubricate the lock and latch mechanisms and check the grounds for the rear wiper for rot, things tend to get crusty in there.

There are a lot of early XJ headliner threads out there, a google search for "XJ headliner" is likely to turn up some pictures.

I haven't a clue about the taillight covers.

I took off my, Euro type, full front brush guard and tossed it. I looked at how it was mounted and thought in any sort of front end collision it was likely to cause more damage, than do any good protecting anything.

Re: a few XJ 87 questions.

I dont have a picture on me, but I took out my torn and ragged head liner in favor of the metallic look. Personally I am very glad I did it. Gives it a rugged feel that for sure.

Re: a few XJ 87 questions.

The instrument panel speakers are very near the front courtesy lamps. In the bottom (curved) portion of the dash.
Make sure you get all the screws out of the rear hatch panel before you try to take it off and pry gently, if you force it, the tabs may snap off. Old plastic gets brittle anyway. It's not rocket science, but getting the rear hatch panel off can be more of a pain than you'd think. Your almost guarantied to need a drill and some sheet metal screws (though you'll likely be screwing into fiber glass) to get it back on there again and not rattle.
If your rear hatch panel is carpeted, and you need to add some screws to hold it down, a neat trick is to drill through the carpet with the drill motor in reverse. It takes a bit more force, but makes life so much easier.

Re: a few XJ 87 questions.

yea, ive dealt with these plastic tabs already. lucky this jeep has been vibrated enough on a few logging roads in the area that everything is a bit loose.

I just pried my drivers seat belt panel back because my belt stopped working.
the belt itself is fully extended and it wont wind back in. any ideas on this?

and man, someone wasnt thinking when they decided to put speakers in this jeep (or any vehicle for that matter.) "lets direct the sound towards the drivers and passengers feet." A+
if their aren't speakers in here already i will eventually put some in. I had decided that i was going to put a wide home stereo center in the opening just below the glove box. and also take out the ashtray and put a 4x6 or something in the spot there as well.
