I took my 95 grandcherokee in to the closest autozone to me and they told me that there is a small gap in years where it requires some special kind of computer that they don't carry

They are correct. 1995 was the model year that the auto industry began the transition from OBD-I computers to the new universal OBD-II computers. ALL vehicles older than '95 will have an OBD-I style computer. Some 1995 vehicles will still have the old OBD-I while others have the new OBD-II. ALL '96 and up vehicles will have an OBD-II compatible computer.
You must have an OBD-I system which is proprietary to the make (Jeep/Chrysler). Therefore, Autozone doesn't have the right scanner (since they'd have to have a seperate scanner for each make). So you'll have to find a mechanic with a Jeep/Chrysler compatible OBD-I computer scanner
Hope that helps
