Progress
the gas gauge on my 87 goes to full when I turn on the key and stays there. It's maybe a ground problem? What are the common causes and where do I look. Thanks in advance for your expertise!

I will take this one guy's! hehehehe the problem is you have a YJ and there are only 7 known working gas gauges on YJ in the world! hehehe best start looking to the oddometer to gauge when you will need fule! It is a jeep thing! In all seriousness it is just a thing that is so common on YJ's that the fix is not worth the effort. tug

Adjustable Thing.. Maybe TJ XJ ?
LOL, tug's right. And I have one of them. And if I see you in my driveway, I'll beat you. LOL. Mine runs out of gas at about the 1/8 mark. Just start learning how many miles you can get and look at that trip meter.

My'92 worked fine, but the one on my '87 jumps back and forth like crazy. Oh well guess I won't have to ask now!

My '88 YJ had a jumper of a fuel guage. Best fix I found was to remove the guage cluster and clean the circuit contacts on the back with a pencil eraser.

Mine runs out at a 1/4 tank, and jumps all around on the way there!! That is, unless the fuel sending unit decides to stick again-that really sucks because the needle still jumps around, so you think that it is still working.
