What is the best way to replace the dash speakers in a yj? i've never done it, and i really need to get mind changed out. take the dash off? hire a small monkey to climb behind the dash? play blind? build special tools?

Seriously, I did it once on my YJ and it was a total nightmare. I just had new ones installed in the dash for $60 at a local stereo place. Those guys are used to installing them, do have small hands to get in tight places and it took them less than 1 hour. It was SOOOOO worth that money. I'm up for doing pretty much anything myself on my jeep, but after the first go there's no way I'd ever do it again. Putting that first set in may have been the most frustrating thing I've ever done, I almost lost my mind. The driver's side is a real pain, removing the parking brake assembly and all. But, hey you might have better luck than me.

I was going to try it, but decided to take it to a friend at a stereo place like geopig did. They even said that they are extremely dificult to install--only because you have to tear apart everything in the Jeep pretty much.

Just leave them alone and disconnect them that speaker location sucks. Buy speaker pods that fit a TJ down buy the door from Qudratec.

i'm definitely going to go for it myself... i'm looking at how the dash can pull forward.. i might be able to pry myself some space that way

Snitty really is not worth the effort. Like mentioned befor it is a pain and location does not have good sound any way. I mounted a pair of Auto box speakers to the floor on the tranny hump back near the heater outlet and kind of aimed them to each front seat cocked to the left and right and tilted up a bit in my ol YJ and they sounded great and were out of the way to boot. tug

well.. i know a few kids in the bling bling crowd.. really dumb kids... who successfully changed theirs... if they are capable, I know I am...

as for location.. i've been quite happy with the sound they produce at their stock spots. I can tune the bass out of them so they can handle the volume I give them

This thread came at a pretty good time for me. I've been looking at different options for sound in my YJ. I like the amount of sound that comes from the stock speakers, and the position, too. But, I want more (ain't that always the case with a Jeeper? Always wanting more of whatever it has to offer?). So, I've been tinkering with the idea of removing the stock speakers, but got to looking at them and almost started crying, having flashbacks to my old Datsun pu and it's speakers! It was a horrible experience that scarred me for life! I have a catalog around here that I just got the other day (not Quadratech, but similar) that has a speaker system that mounts on the tranny hump between the shifters and the heater vent. I have my CB mounted right below my ashtray, and don't know if I'll have clearance for that system. It's a small CB, but still may limit the space. If that won't work, I was going to get the pods that mount next to the kick panel on each side.

My '99 Camry that I traded for my Jeep was a real pain for the rear speaker swap, too. They were in the deck, but mounted on top of the steel panel, under the deck cover. Not like most I've seen that are easily accessible from the trunk, mounted to the bottom of the steel deck panel. I had to practically tear out both rear seats, the deck cover, cyclops brake light, etc to get them out. But, I put the new ones where they should be, mounted from inside the trunk to the bottom of the deck plate. Sheesh, what a pain!

get the speaker boxes from thor, they mount in between the wheel well and the roll bar and are great cuz they hold 6x9's check quadratec or order them from thor enterprises

I found the catalog I was talking about. It was 4Wheel Drive Parts. They have the Sound Wedges that mount between the wheel well and the roll bar. $89 for just the boxes, $159 for boxes with speakers.

I think they are a fine location. Get ones with water risistant cones (Pioneer). They will never have good bass response becuse of the small speaker size and the fact that they're not mounted in a sealed enclosure. If matched to the proper power output they will sound fine so long as you're not one of the "turn the bass all the way up" types, which Snitty, I'd like to think you are not. hehehe

I used to install systems years ago and did alot of YJ's. You can get your hand up in there and loosen the cheap nuts by hand. The first time I actually had to take the dash apart (which was quite the project) was when I changed the ones in Whitey - only because they had been changed beforehand and whoever did it used speed clips.

I say take 'em off blind that's what I always did and I have big fred flintstone hands and I managed. When you put the new ones in you can use speed clips that just push on to hold them in, but if you want to change them a second time you'll be yanking the dash.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention make sure you get a set of speakers with a gasket on the speaker side of the mounting bracket - otherwise the speaker will be mashed up against the dash and will buzz buzz buzz ....

actually.. i do have a subwoofer to pick up on the low end frequencies... and i tune all bass out of the high frequency speakers... i like to enjoy all ranges of frequency in music... and it just doesn't come out right if it is all coming from one speaker... but no.. no boom boom bling bling here... though it is often loud

I've had subs too. Enjoying a full range of sound - even loud ....

well there's a difference.

A good idea is to install some passive crossovers (aka bass blockers) so they don't bottom out. They're very inexpensive (ebay or local electronics store). Cut them off at 200-400 Hz. Then a sub or a set of full range speakers in the back that can handle a little bass (i.e: 6x9's in boxes)

They'll handle a heck of alot more power that way too.
