i've got a 90 jy with the stock dana 35. i'm running 31's which work fine with the 35 but i would like to get larger tires and a locker. what rear axle (and from what vehicle) should i get for the most strength AND easiest swap. assuming i got a complete assembly including brakes, what else would i need. i've never done anything like this before, but i want to learn and i'm not afraid of messing up.

Welcome to the "Z"!!!! Are you runnin' a 4banger? Might have some gearing issues, too, if you wanna go bigger than 31's.

also, 87-89 XJ with factory towing package had D44 rear, just need to move the spring perches, or go all out and find a 77-79 fsj, D44 f&r but were 6 lugs, but same width

it's a 6 cyl. (4.2). i've considered the 8.8 out of an explorer (i could be confused here), but i wanted to get some more input. i've also heard that the 8.8 is definitly stronger than the 35, but that 120% is crap.

If you're planning on keeping the front axle, or keeping it stock, then the XJ D44 would be my first choice.....if you can find one that is. The 8.8" is okay, and makes a nice swap into a YJ because it has a good width and the same lug pattern. It's a C-clip axle, so get one with disc brakes for the extra safety factor. It's an easy swap.

actually the 120% is true, i looked at actual torque ratings and the 8.8 is more than double the 35, thats what sold me on it

If you can find that D44 from an XJ or MJ thats the way to go. The Ford axle is awesome too, and you can find em with 4.10's and a trac-loc. If your not worried about wheel bolt patterns get a scout II dana 44, good width and they are very cheap.

the 44 is gonna be harder to track down, the 8.8 can wind up being a little more of an investment, although finding it with the right gears is always a plus, good luck with it, its always a PITA trying to get something to fit close to normal and all that
