You really have to consider a cheap header as a pre-assembled header kit. Some people bolt them on and never have a problem for the life of the header, but alot of them aren't right when you get them. They just take some prep work. The first thing you want to do is check the welds and repair any questionable ones. They are usually okay, but pinholes and shallow penetration can become bigger weld flaws when subjected to the heating/cooling cycles and vibration. Check the fitment and make any tube modifications before you bolt them to the engine. And most importantly, check the gasket sealing surfaces with a straight edge before you waste a gasket and lots of time finding out they aren't flat. I usually run cheap headers on everything as long as the tube diameter and length are what I want. I had to make my own collector flanges on the hedmans that are in the CJ though. The collectors and flanges that came with them were horrible.

I've been laser cutting flanges for a guy that makes custom headers for a few of his projects now, and I've almost gotten brave enough to try and make my own set.
