After reading here and on other sites all the confusion on what size tank a jeep has, I decided to figure mine out. Anyone can do it. Put 5 gallon tank in back of jeep. Drive until it is needed. Pour it in and get to the nearest gas station. I've had 5 extra gallons in the tank for 4 years and didn't know it.

I've figured out that when my little "gas pump" light comes on ('03 TJ), I've got 4 or 5 gallons left......allegedly a 19 gal. tank. I've yet to put anywhere near 19 gals in it. I just make sure I'm full when I'm going exploring off road (past "somewhat scary" experience). Still thinking of adding a couple of Jerry cans just in case!!

My 87 doesn't have that luxury. When the needle quits bouncing, it's on the bottom of the tank. Just figured that out.

Kansas Jeepers
My 84's gas gauge is broken. I've learned that the tank is empty when the engine starts sputtering and dies (I had quite an experience up in the mountains one time). I'll probably try to fix that when i drop in my stroker this summer...don't want to burn up that electric fuel pump. I think the tank is somewhere around 15 gallons.

I still have a working gauge, but I know to stop when I'm approaching 380-390 miles on the trip meter (still getting 20+ mpg!!)

RE: need help
What size should mine have? I've yet to put more than 11 gallons in it, even when it's running on "E".

i just mad a 2000 + mile road trip from ny to myrtel beach in my jeep. and i havent had a working gas gauge in it since i got it. i'm about to put in a nice one now that i finally found the resistance readings i needed.
anyways 2000 miles plus and i didnt run out of gas but once. it was in a 5 hour traffic jam. i had 5 galllons on the back bumperette i poured in and then i drove right into the ditch and mudded it to the nearest exit. lol the construction guys werent happy.

A CJ7 is supposed to have a 15 gallon tank unless you have the later model with a 23 gallon tank. The larger tank is easily identified because it hangs below the bumper somewhat.

Ok so im guessing my 88' YJ has a 20 gallon tank?? i dont have a gas gauge anymore, who needs them, haha, but my current gas gauge is the trip meter. the farthest i've gotten on a tank of gas, without running out completely, is like 220 miles. But thats with a lift and 31" mud tires. Well thanks

LR, the '88 could have either the 15gal or 20gal (optional) tank. Best way to tell on '87-'90 is to look at the distance between the fuel tank skid and the rear driver's side shackle. If you've got the same amount of clearance as between the skid and the pass. side shackle (where the factory exhaust exits) it's a 15gal tank. If there's very little clearance between the tank skid and driver's side shackle, it's a 20gal. tank.
My '88 had the 15 gal. and that space was perfect for the 2nd pipe on the dual exhaust after swapping in the 350. The dual turn-downs with the factory appearance was awesome.

I'm gussin its a 20 galon tank cuz if the tailpipe didnt come out where it did the gas tank would be the same distance from the shackles on both sides. the gas tank is formed around so that tailpipe can pass between the tank and the shackle but if the pipe wasnt there it would be the same distance. Well i hope thats right. well thanks

Sherrif Brody would
That sounds like mine. I only have about an inch or a little more on the driver's side. And I know for certain now that it is a 20 gallon tank. I put 250 miles on it and put 18 gallons in. So I had 2 gallons of riding left. WooHoo.
