I picked up a new 1989 F-150 5.0L external fuel pump today, having read online that it works well with the 4.0l engines (4.6L in my case). At the auto store, the guy at the parts counter convinced me to buy a new screen for the pump. Now what I'm wondering is where this thing goes. Do I just need to return the screen and install a fuel filter before the pump? If I do that, will there be enough pressure to have one downstream of the fuel pump?

usually its best to put the pump inline before the filter, as long as you have a sock on the sending unit
