tranny question oh wise ones

well i'm back again. i have an 88 yj sahara . it has the 258 6 cyl in it. the problem is the transmission i had rebuilt last winter. i got a new torque converter with the rebuild. the original tc had no ring gear pressed on the outter part of it. the new one had one on the tc itself. i dont know why they would have it on the tc but i use the ring gear on the flexplate for starting purposes.
i'm wondering if i got a tc for a newer 904 transmission , possibly for a lock up torque converter.??? i dont know. would this be a problem and if so what would be some of the problems associated with this ?
i'm getting some weird shifts from this thing now after about 3000 miles on it. sometimes it will make an awful racket when it down shifts when i gass it bad, kinda like the tranny is slipping.
so any ideas? comments. or thoughts on the matter would be nice.

You can have my tranny. The piece of #%@% just blew up on me today. This jeep is costing me a lot of money lately and really starting to .........never mind, I won't get started on this one.

well i wouldnt mind a standard tranny, i just dont know which ones would be the easyiest swap. i hate to spend the money and then find out it wont work. so i still dont know what to think about this torque converter issue. hopeing for some help here. thanks all
