need help with tach

OK guys i need help.

here is the history
87 yj 4.2
converted to
93 yj 4.0

in the swap i got everything
motor, trans, tranx case, gauges, computer, complete harness (all but rear lights).

the whole thing went fairly smooth, that was last year, i have been slowly working all the bugs out and my last 2 are the tach and the gas gauge.

I would love a fuel gauge, but more would love to have my tach back
all the wiring is hooked up (no empty plugs...) the only thing i am not sure of is this, i dont have a fuse for the tach under the dash, however i didnt get the cover for the power dist center, so i dont know what all goes to what everything works fine, and i used 1 of those relays for my e2000 fuel pump. but there is also a ton of fuses out there and i dont know if 1 goes to the tach or not. When you turn the key on the tach will move like its going to work when you start the motor but it doesnt.
I could put a after market on it but hate to. i just want the dash to work right.

sorry its sol long but all info helps i know.

any thoughts.

Re: need help with tach

Tried a wiring diagram? It should tell you where to hook the tach. The gas gauge should have hooked right up. Should only be on wire from the sender.

Re: need help with tach

yes i have tried the wiring diagram, but only with the cheapy manual, and as it turns out there are at least 2 different plugs used to run lights and fuel wires to the rear, and the new and old didnt match, so i had to splice the lights and i could never figure out the fuel gauge. still working on the tach, but thanks for the help.

Re: need help with tach

Probably going to have to ditch trying to find the wire from the harness and just run a new wire from the sender wire on top of the tank all the way up to the gauge.
The tach wire will probably have to be spliced into the harness wire that goes to the computer. Not sure on that one though. Been a while since I've looked at a 4.0.
Where are all the board electrical gurus?

Re: need help with tach

ok, man i dont know weather to feel dumb or lucky.

I fixed the tach, and i cant beleive for the last year i have been with out it for some thing so stupid!!!!!!!

i took the tach and speedo out, because i was to the point that maybe it was just a bad tach (could happen), so i had the assem. in my hand and took the cover off of the tach to see what was involved THATS WHEN I SAW IT!!!!! HILARITY!!!!!
some how the needle had jump the peg that holds it up at its lowest setting ( you know the one the needle should rest on when you turn the key off) so i did see it jump to life, but it could not go anywhere cause it was on the wrong side of the peg. man life it good. and now i will move on to the fuel gauge issue.

Redrooster thanks for taking time to read and post up suggestions.
