on-board air
im putting a 83 258 w/ ac into my 75 cj5. i dont plan on hooking up the ac or anything, as i'll have the top down every time its not raining (not my daily driver)... so my question is... what all is needed to use the a/c compressor for onboard air? i know i have to put an air filter in the intake line, i guess get a 5/8 to 1/4" adapter to run a air line to a tank, and get some sort of regulator?

Re: on-board air
on my old 91 (cant find a compressor setup for my 89w/serp. belt) all i did was ziptie a filter (used an foam lawnmower element cut to fit) on the intake side, kept it oiled w/compressor oil to lube the sanden compressor (york shouldn't be much different but the sanded doesnt have an oil sump), plumbed line along the inside frame rail to a regulator/switch (obtained used from a local compressor shop) and then to tank (portable from home depot) in the bed - the regulator was set for 125 max and 70 min, then wired to the master switch going to the hot wire on the compressor clutch - used this setup for 3 yrs+ w/out a problem - may not be a typical experience but worked for me and only cost about $50 in parts- could air a 32" tire in less than 2 min from 8lbs to 25lbs plus ran impacts etc.... gotta get mine set up again - i kept it simple and pretty basic - but you can get as extreme as you want.... just my $.02

Re: on-board air
Here's a link I found while researching OBA for my rig. Looks complete to my semi-electrical/mechanical eyes.
This is the setup I plan to try after replacing all my suspension and cab bushings.

Re: on-board air
Let's try this again with my eyes open. Here is the link to a good looking OBA conversion ... http://www.visi.com/~bsimon/jeep/my_air.html

Re: on-board air
Great post guys, I have air on my 89 YJ and have already rerouted the belt to bypass the AC compressor. I was planning on yanking the AC system, but now you guys have given me a much better alternative!! Thanks!

Re: on-board air
theres a wire running to the clutch... take that and run it thru a switch to the regulator... that way you can turn the compressor off at the switch and the regulator will control the pressure when turned on (its the wire running to the compressor that controls the clutch)

Re: on-board air
There is something called a Coalescing Filter that you will need to put in line from your compressor heading to-wards your tank.
It catches two things one the oil blow by and any water.
Try Kirby Enterprises for parts and schematics.
