4.0L Carb? No Carb?

I was taking to a buddy of mine today and we were discussing if a 4.0L Jeep engine ever came equiped with a carb? And neither one of us were sure of that answer, Can anyone shed some light on this situation it would be greatly appreciated.

4.0 is fuel injected, the 4.2 has a carb.

The 4.0 is what replaced the 4.2L. The 4.2 had the carter carb. and then it was replaced with the fuel injected 4.0.

Re: 4.0L Carb? No Carb?

I would check to see if the early 4.0 in teh xj was carbed?

ford made a carbed 4.0 in teh late 70's early 80's in teh explorer truck (not the explorer you know as the SUV, but the original one, it was a cheap base model pickup)

Re: 4.0L Carb? No Carb?

The injected 4.0L didn't replace the carbed 4.2L, they were used at the same time from '88-'90, the FI 4.0L in the XJ/MJ and the carbed 4.2L in the YJ. It was in '91 that the YJ adopted the FI 4.0L already in use on other models and changed the Renix system to an updated more reliable MPFI system.

The Chrysler 4.0L used in jeeps was never carbed.

You can use a 4.0L head ('91+ HO) on a 4.2L for a great power boost, so it stands to reason that the 4.0L intake and FI will adapt as well. The intake runners are higher on the HO head so you'll have to use large washers on the manifold bolts to hold everything on.
