Stinger bumper

I'm looking into making/buying a front bumper for my CJ7, and have seen quite a few designs out there. To be honest, I kinda like the simple 2x4 steel bumper that is about as wide as the grill, maybe with a small hoop on it. I was wondering though, what is the benefit of having something like a stinger/hoop bumper? Will it help that much in the instance of a roll over, or is it mostly for looks? I would definatley like some roll over proctection should the unspeakable happen , but also don't know how I feel about having a giant hoop in my view while I'm cruising down the highway. Anyone here run a stinger bumper who can recommend one or dissuade me from buying one?

Cool Re: Stinger bumper

A stinger, if built properly, will definitly help in te case of a low speed roll. It would need to be in combination with a good cage with a single front hoop. [u]Not wrangler style sprreaders.[u]
As for vivibility, My last ride had one, once the new smell wore off I hardly noticed it anymore.

Re: Stinger bumper

I look at my stinger every day...its reassuring to see it floating out there. As you can see I used a 1x5x.250 seamed tubing and 3x4x.1875 angle to weld up my front bumper. We used 1 inch strap material to close off the plasma cut ends. We mig-welded the strap and the bumper together and put enough weld on so we could radius the corners and welds. The front hoop holes were milled through the bumper itself and welded front and back as were the 1x2x3 clevis blocks.
The bumper is 51 inches wide and has a license plate holder made out of 1/4 thick plate. The hoop took a 190 ton press to bend because all we had laying around the shop was 1.5x.3125 non-seamed A-10 tubing. As for a roll over...with a Rock-Hard cage thats mounted through the tub to the frame I only worry about what happens when the stinger turns my jeep on her side...will the 1/2 doors allow a nasty rock to come through. With all of the rock crawling I do out here in Utah the choice was a no-brainer. Because its not if...but when.

The best part of a stinger is parking it at your favorite bar/restaurant and watching the drunks come out and walk right into it at night...they stare at wondering where in the heck did that come from. Paint it flat black and get ready to laugh! We do have a sense of humor out here in Utah.

Re: Stinger bumper

Here's the best reason I can give you to get one. This is my buddy Steve. He literally stood on his stinger. The front wheels came off the ground for all of about two looooong seconds. I've used mine in the same way once before, and believe me, I was glad I had it because landing upside down in a stream bed full of rocks was not my idea of fun.

What trail is that? That's an awesome picture. I'm glad he didn't destroy that nice Jeep.
The stinger is designed to pitch you to one side in case you go end over in the front. It will do little to protect in a side roll.

That was coming down Upper 2. We were on our way to Lower 2.
