84 CJ-7 won't stay running

When I try to start the engine catches and runs as long as it is cranking. When I return the key to run, it dies. Someone suggested that the coil wasn't getting enough power so I connected positive side of coil directly to battery. It runs, but it runs rough and I am sure the direct connect is not good for the coil. I also tried a new coil and had the same problem.

84 CJ-7

Howell TBI fuel injection

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Check the wire in the harness from the coil. its a resistor wire, and, your right, its not good to bypass that wire. you might have a short within the harness or a break on the resistor wire.
