Re: Welcome new members - please read

Hey Everybody,
I have a 1983 CJ-8, 258 in line 6 w stock carb. I have replaced and or rebuilt 4 carbs in the past 4 years! I am tired of spending many dollars for not much results. The only carb that has worked for longer than 6mos was a 2 barrell
Weber that was legal for off road only, here in Ca. It improved my mileage and performance but doesn't pass visual so replaced it with stock. Carb won't run longer than 20 min...This is the ongoing problem. Jeep is parked and I'm bummed. Anybody have the same problems? I'd sure appreciate some help and ideas mechanics seem baffled.
Thanks,Rob

The only help I can offer is......you might want to post this in the "Tech" section - I seriously doubt if it will get many reads here. Since you're new here, I'll cut you some slack (as far as posting to a "sticky").......browse around, maybe even use the "search" feature. Lots of good minds on here!!!

Oh, and welcome to the "Z"!!!!!

Re: Carb problems

I had an 85 for some time, with the carter carb - it wasn't great, but seemed to run OK after a good cleaning (I had to take the venturi out and clean them with guitar string several times).

I found that doing the TFI upgrade ( http://www.jeepz.com/forum/engine/16...tml#post182641 (TFI ignition upgrade) ) increased the driveability alot.

Would it be possible for you to hack up a stock air cleaner to fit over your weber?

Re: Carb problems

google "nutter bypass".

I've never had the engine, carb you have, but have heard that this is a common problem solution to the engine.

You should make sure that the nutter applies to your year and model, as I don't know.

Re: Carb problems

You could try this Easy Fix for Jeep 258 Carter BBD Idle Problem . jeeptech.com has a lot of good stuff!
I have a Motorcraft 2100 on my 258, so I've never messed with the Carter.

Re: Carb problems

Can you run the Motorcraft 2100 or 2150 out there and pass the visual test? They came stock on some jeep engines, and many models of Fords.

Re: Carb problems

I don't have to do a visual test. What is it for?

I have one of those in my garage, with an adapter plate and gasket. It was for a 1988 YJ (258 motor). I have made a couple half hearted attempts to sell it, but only on Jeepz. If you're interested let me know I can send you some pics. I'd sell it fairly cheap

Oh, I sold the Jeep and have a fuel injected YJ now so I no longer need it if you were wondering why I'm getting rid of it.
