Dana 30 questions 78 CJ7
OK, so I have this Cj7 with a dana 30 in front, a dana 20 in the rear. I got a dana 44 with a posi, and 3.73 gears for the back. I can buy a Detroit Ez locker for that as well from a friend, and another locker for the 30 from a different guy. I also have an unknown diff carrier which has clutches in it(in an unmarked box in the floor of the jeep when I got it) it has 29 splines inside the side gears. how can I find out what that is for? I may be dreaming, but if it's a posi for a Dana 30, I may use it for my front end. Is there any way to ID what this thing is?
I have pics. anyone know if 29 splines is for a particular Axle type? for all I know, It may not even be a dana/Jeep part. Also, I need a set of 3.73 gears for the dana 30 (whatever carrier/locker/posi I end up with) Help please!! Frank

Re: Dana 30 questions 78 CJ7
I can'
t make out the casting numbers, Iif the inside spline count is 29, that means the corresponding axle would be 30 spline.I am no way a CJ expert, but I don't recall a D30 having 30 splines factory. The Model 20 I think had 29 spline shafts, but might be 30 and might be what that carrier is for. Again, I am just guessing. I have a couple 2.73+up D44 carriers in my garage waiting to get scrapped and none of them look like that, so I am leaning towards a Model 20

Thanks for the reply, I think that must be for the model 20 in the back of my jeep, how much would it take to get you to ship one of those D44 carriers to CA, so i can put a locker in it? I was told that the posi carrier will not work for the locker I have access to.

No it won't posi carrier won't take a lunch box locker. you wanna pay shipping, I will send it to you, I can also through a bunch of bearings, shims, any thing you need. the carrier has 2.73 ring on there now, if you want me to save some shipping $$ I can take it off, or I can send the corresponding pinion out with it. Just so you know, this carrier won't take any gears lower than 3.73:1 (or Numerically higher like 4.10:1)

Oh ya, I live in Boston, so it might be worth your while to see if you can find something local for free, most people give these carriers away or scrap them (much like me)

Re: Dana 30 questions 78 CJ7
This won't answer your entire question, bu tmay help:
Jeep Axle: AMC 20
and here:
Jeep Axle: Dana 30
I'm pretty sure the carrier you have is for the AMC 20, but I don't know what ratio it covers. You will have to measure the thickness of the flange and try to research from there.

Re: Dana 30 questions 78 CJ7
very helpful, thanks. Looks like that Posi is for the AMC dana 20, I'm not buying one piece axles for it, I got a 44, so I need to build the front 30 up, and get matching gears hoping for 4.10 or 4.30. thanks again, Frank
