As with many things small things that you're likely going to notice wrong with a 10 yr old vehicle, you've gotta decide how much work and time you're willing to invest. Personally, I wouldn't chase the problem or rip the dash apart. I'd just drive it.
2005 Rubicon, 4inch Skyjacker, 750W inverter, on-board air front and rear, ARB front bumper w/ 2x55W Hella spots & 8kMM, rear swing away with 4x55W CAT work lights and custom jamboree rack with ammo cans, 2x5ga jerry cans, axe, shovel, pintle hitch, Sierra Off Road Trailer.

fair enough I dont mind investigating a bit i was wonderin if maybe a wire or something underneath could have been the problem.

There is a Connector on the 4wd switch mounted on top of the t.case. disconnect that connector, verify that the two Wires are Black/ red and Black . Use a small paper clip to run a jumper across the two terminal. turn the ignition on and see if the 4wd is illuminated. if not check the bulb or the wiring on the cluster. IF it does light up with the jumper, replace the 4wd switch on the t.case.

^^What he said, it's either the bulb, 4wd indicator switch on transfer case, or wiring in between.
