    Gas gauge problems..

Ever since i bought this jeep it has had a bad gas gauge(well actually it might not be the gauge). Whenever i fill up it goes to full, but when i am completely empty it only shows as half full. It also doesn't slowly move, it just jumps.

I have been told that this is actually somewhat common in the '93 YJ's. Has anyone had experienced this before? The guy that i bought it off of said that it could be just a ten dollar fix that he never got around to.

Does anyone have any idea on what to do??

    Thanks

yeah that was my first idea, but that is an option that i put on the end of the list bc of the price.. could it be anything with the fuses

Since the fuel Gauge has somewhat a response to the amount of fuel in the tank, that rules out a fuse issue. from what it sounds like, the rheostat on the Sending unit is shorted.

Pretty common to all YJ's, not just the '93. Check the contacts on the back of the fuel gauge, you can clean them with a pencil eraser. Otherwise I'd clean the striker contact where the float arm sweeps across the sending unit.
