If it's a u-joint you'll hear a loud noise when first put into gear...particularly reverse...happened on my Grand Cherokee with an automatic...[addsig]

o, by the way...if you hear it in your steering...check your suspension too, it might be due to initial torque load on the suspension...but chances are it won't be easy to find if it's only little suspension play[addsig]

Check the transmission mount and the torque mount on the transfer case. Also check your motor mounts for wear. Make sure the transfer case linkage is tight.[addsig]
