easiest way to access clutch in cj5 1967

i have a friends cj5 1967 with a f134 and t90/t18 that needs the clutch replaced and he wants me to help. the question is what is the fastest easiest way to replace the clutch. would pulling the motor forwards for access be easier than removing the shifters and trying to move the trans backwards?

Re: easiest way to access clutch in cj5 1967

first remove the starter , removing levers d 18 transfer has a srcew set in one of the fingers holding the sleeve thats ran thru shift levers losen set screw and remove the sleeve now the levers are removed . 5 min process now for trans , depress shift handle rotate counter clockwise 1/4 turn then lift out now remove trans its easier with the cross member attached to trans just remove cross member bolts and drop trans down cross member attached helps with leverage removing trans takes about 1/2 hour .

Don't try to just slide the trans back or slide the engine forward to r/r a clutch. Either the engine or trans must be removed, in this case removing the trans is the easiest.

Re: easiest way to access clutch in cj5 1967

yep looks like the trans is the easiest now i know that the shift lever comes out with out removing the top of the transmission. i know on mine i never could get the pin out of the transfer case to remove the levers, on one end is a grease zerk and the other end was secured with a square head screw so i had no way to get a hold of it and no way to tap it to break it free maybe on this one i will get lucky. the cj manual i have doesnt realy help with the old jeeps so thanks for your help guys.

mudding is fun until all of your friends rigs end up in your yard broken
