I spoke with a buddy last night who said that all 2.5L wranglers come with 4.11 gears. Is that true? I know I can do the 'watch-my-driveshaft-rotate-while-turning-the-tires-one-time' thing, but until I do that, does anyone know this for sure?

    thx

if you do the "watch the drivetrain while...." you can only get an estimate... you can't tell the difference between 4.11 and 4.10... but if they are stock axles.. you should have 4.10, they all came like that, the 2.5 that is[addsig]

Well, I did the watch and count and sure enough, it was right at 4 rotations, give 10% for error and that puts it at 4.10 or 4.11, whatever. Either way, that is cool. So when I put my 32's on this summer, I don't have swap to 4.10s! That helps. Actually, I guess that helps the engine mostly. Cool. Thanks for the confirmation guys.

actually... i don't want to burst your bubble... but if you are going with 32's... you'll probably want to change the gears... because the 2.5 is not a very powerful motor, they put in 4.10 gears in so you can use that motor to run even stock sized tires... you'll probably want to go 4.56 or 4.88... if you had a 4.0, and wanted to upgrade, you could go to 4.10... but my friend, another member here, who is unable to speak on his own behalf for the time being, put 32's on and it was very very sluggish... no 5th gear capability[addsig]

NO, not all 2.5L Wranglers came with 4.11 gears, only the 2.5L 5-spd Wranglers. The 2.5L autos came with 3.73 gears.

Yes you will still want to regear with the addition of larger tires. You will want to install 4.88 gears, cuz 4.56 is not much of a change to be worth the expense and trouble. Do it right the first time. Sell your 4.10 gears to a 6cyl owner looking to upgrade from 3.07 gears.

    Most 6cyl. 5spd came with 3.07 gears. 6cyl. autos came with 3.07, 3.55, or 3.73.[addsig]

How much does it cost to have a shop swap in 4.88s into both axles? Ball park.

$800 to $1000. You can sometimes find experienced jeepers and/or mechanics who may do it on the side for less.[addsig]

if you are buying new... you are looking at about $350-$400 for the gears alone. swapping them is not too tough, as long as you can keep a visual of what has to go on. [addsig]

Got a couple of friends in my Jeep club running 33s, 4-bangers, and 4.10s... They are having no problems...

Save your cash and upgrade the entire axle later when you wanna move to 35s... Then, you can install a D44, D60 or Corp 14 with a more aggressive ratio... I just can't see dumping $$$ into a Dana-35c... D35c = Junk...[addsig]

33s with 4.10... that's pretty tough there... even 32s with stock gears are tough
They can hit 70+ on the highway fairly easily... I can understand your worries though... I usually just pretend like 5th gear doesn't exist...

And the engine/wheel/gear combo is more than enough when you have it in 4-Low... In fact, last trip we were on, the only machines to make it up a hill we call Driveshaft were unlocked 4-bangers and a Cherokee... (Disclaimer: No one was locked on that trip and it had rained the night before making everything pretty slick) I can only attribute that to the gear ratios or wheelbase (in the case of the Cherokee), as everyone was still running their stock ratios...[addsig]
