i'm trying to change the u joints on a 83 cj7 without luck. i can't get the old ones off. what are we doing wrong? we have not taken the axle off so we are working with the joints still attached and yes we are trying to get the c clamps off, but there is still no give in the old ones. help. Have you taken the driveshafts off the Jeep? Have you gotten the retaining things (can't remember the proper name) out of the shafts, so that you can bang out the U joints?

If I remember right, I had to unbolt the Ujoints from the axles at each end (just 4 bolts on each end on the drive shaft), then sit with the shaft on the ground, and using snap ring plyers (much easier than withough using them) pull the snap rings out. Then I would take a hammer and a punch and beat the U joint out of the shaft from one side, then flip it over and put on the Ujoint "cup" from the other. I would then wiggle and work the u joint out.

I would then take one cup of the new u joint, and put the rest of the Joint back into the shaft, and put the missing cup on from the other side.
