94 4 cyl in an 89 YJ - runs rough

I'm new to the Jeep community. (2 wks).
Purchased an '89 Wrangler YJ.

Running rough. Had new plugs, dist cap, rotor, wires & pcv valve. Runs "smoother" but not correct.

My question: where to go from here?
- different engine "electronics module" incompatible?
- go to a carburator
- other

Any assistance greatly appreciated!

Welcome to Jeepz.com.
Just so that I understand, you've got an 89 Wrangler with the engine from a 94 installed right? Did you do the swap, or the previous owner?

1. Is the engine currently throwing any codes? (take it to Autozone / Advance and have them hookup their reader)
2. Do you know when / if the ignition coil was replaced?

In my opinion, I would not downgrade a fuel injected engine to a carburator.

1. I did not do the engine swap.
2. I don't know about the coil.
3. I have not had the codes checked.

It is running but very rich on gas, you can smell it.

I will have the codes checked next. Good to know about the carb. Thank you.

will advise code results.

Advance Auto will only check if the "check engine soon" light is on. It's not on. I'm going to talk to a 4wd center. Will advise.

Check your battery. Clean the terminals and ground locations

google up how to read the codes for that engine, 94 OBDII wasn't out yet so you need to do the jey jiggle to get the engine service light to flash them to you

Is your '89 TBI? If so, I'd get a rebuild kit for the throttle body and start there, cleaning it very well as you go.

Any trouble codes on an '89 need checked through the OBD I port on the passenger fender under the hood.
