Hi There Boys And Girls,



My 91 YJ 4.0 has been leaking oil from the rear main oil seal (at the rear of the sump) since I bought it. I know that this is a two piece seal, one above the crank guide and one between the crank guide and the sump.

Two Questions:



1. Can both sides of this seal be replaced without removing the engine, tranny and dropping the crank shaft?



2.My local american car part importer, told me there are two types of seal:

One with a single lip and one with a double lip, now which one fits in my Jeep? , Please take note that I have to import these spares from the U.S and I need my vehicle so removing the sump would take too much of my time.



I would appreciate help seeing that the supplier suggested I order both just to be sure!!I am sure he didn't mind that! Thanks in advence for your help

you should get the engine block serial no., also vehicle no. just in case. call a dealer about this and get a part no. for this item. this now can be mached for an after market part. how about ordering it off the internet. it shouldn't cost that much, order both of them. are you sure its a two peice i was almost sure its a one peice and 4.2 carbed jeeps "77-90" are two peice. nothing is worse then having the wrong part. Well either way you'll know when you look at it, and to answer your questioin if it is two peice like 4.2s you should be able to i've done two and i backed the bolt for the main bearings off and was able to install it fine with out removing the tranny[addsig]

Well, it goes like this. First, I just replaced the rear seal in my 85 CJ7 (258 cu in with weber carb) about a month ago. We put it up on a lift. removed the oil pan and then loosened the rear main. Mine was the two piece so it was fairly easy to replace. Just remember to be careful installing the new one and to also make sure it lubricated well.

If yours is the one piece you will have to drop the crank. Good luck. Also when you loosen the main bearings, check the sleaves to see if any brass is showing, if it is and they are pretty worn. Then you might also want to replace the main bearings also.
