Ok the jeep is an 88 yj 4.2 ....The problem is when I am driving
the temp stays at the mark above 210, but when I put it 4th gear
it starts to climb until I get the engine around 2000 rpm's, Off-roading
no problem never gets hot, highway it does??? 1st -3rd are fine 4th
and I am driving at highway speeds and then I come to a stop it shoots up
but if I idle the engine at about 1500 rpm's it stays back down around the
mark above 210.. Now 5th gear just forget it, it gets to hot to fast, Why
at higher rpm's is it staying cooler in the lower gears??? ANY HELP PLEASE>>> :-( [addsig]

Maybe it's the clutch fan. With the hood open have someone or your self turn off the jeep and look and see if the fan keeps turning. If it turns for days and days after it's been turned off i would think that the clutch fan went bad. The same thing happend to me so i just put in a flex-a-lite fan. No more problems.
When your at higher speeds there is more air going though your radiator then at lower speed.
THIS IS JUST MY ADVICE. :-D

It only goes up at intersections if I have been running 60-65
mph for a little while if not it stays the same temp...
So if I start the jeep and have someone turn it off and the fan keeps
turning the fan is bad??? :-( [addsig]

If the fan and the fan clutch is the same unit ya it would be the fan. It's been awhile since i had a stock fan,[addsig]

I just went thru the same problems. After a new radiator, a new fan clutch, a new water pump, a new temp sending switch in the head, I found out the gauge was a pile of junk. I replaced it with a new aftermarket mechanical one and my temp is a buck 50 to a bock 70. AAAWWW is nice to be able to drive it again without worrying.[addsig]

For my two cents I would say replace trhe fan/clutch. The reason is this at higher RPM's the fan is able to pull enough air through to cool the engine and at lower speeds and idle the worn out clutch spins slower drawing less air allowing the temp to rise.
It might not free spin if the clutch is totaly gone but I think its going. and as it gets hot the clutch is slipping.[addsig]

I replaced a lot of stuff before i found out that it was the fan. First i had the radiator rebuilt and i another core put in, still overheating, then the thermostat and water pump i went though two water pumps beacuse the first one was bad, still overheating. Then in month later i sad ahhh what about the fan , bought a new fan and all better. For me i just started replacing stuff tell i found it. The jeep has over 100,000 miles on parts like that so i thought that it might be time anyways. [addsig]
