Hello everybody. I have an 89 jeep wrangler, but the engine is a little tired and needs rebuilt. It is a 4.2. I have considered a 4.3 vortec swap, but feel that rebuilding the 4.2 is faster and more cost effective. I would like to get more horsepower out of it than stock. That's where you come in. I would like to have your suggestions on how to get more horsepower. Any input would be appreciated. Thank you jeepz.com for the great source of information, and thanks in advance for the information.

Welcome to the board.......I'm sure you'll be able to find all of the answers you are looking for.

Let me ask a coupleof questions first.

What do you need the horsepower for ? Towing, off road mods, street racing ( hafta ask lol)

What are you looking to do as far as mods go ? Total engine rebuild (cam boring (new pistons etc) or just bolt on mods ?

If you can give us an idea of what you want to do, we can better help you with your project

Thanks for the quick response!
To answer your questions:

What do you need the horsepower for ? Towing, off road mods, street racing ( hafta ask lol)
Mild off-roading, fun challenging trails, just a get-around at my lake place.

What are you looking to do as far as mods go ? Total engine rebuild (cam boring (new pistons etc) or just bolt on mods ?

Total engine re-build, looking for the most bang for my buck.
Also, looking for reliablity/dependability.

Thanks again,
SpiderBob :-D [addsig]

I should have guessed that I was going to open a can of worms when I started to get into this jeep thing, But......it's hard not to. There is nothing like driving a jeep! So more about my jeep. BDS 2" suspension, 31" tires, weber carb & Air cleaner, everything else is stock. I will be putting a locker in rear, but keeping stock gearing.

I thought while the engine was out, it would be a good time to check into things like a cam or possibly pistons. I like the 4.0 for the power and if there is a way to get that kind of power out of this engine, it would be better than going through all the conversion process. I don't have an endless budget, so I will probably lean toward the mild mods that give me the most for the money. Once the engine is built and in, I will do the bolt-ons like headers etc. Whatever has proven to work well for you all.

Thanks SpiderBob :-D [addsig]

I'd say rebuild the the 4.2 and slap it in. It'll get you back jeepin faster and the 4.2 has plenty of power. Welcome to the board I'm sure you won't regret joining us. [addsig]
