I have an 89 YJ, 4cyl. The water pump busted last week, replaced it. and it was running crappy. Found too much radiator fluid had clogged the Cat.Converter. Also there was a 13 year old recall on my Jeep for the Oxygen Sensor. So I got all of that replaced including new distributor cap, rotor, plugs, and an oil change. Now the Jeep idles at 2000 rpm, sputtering, and when I cut it off, the converter is glowing red, and EXTREMELY hot! I know that there is too much fuel getting in. When I'm at high rpms while I'm driving and try to use engine breaking, I notice that there isn't much vacuum to slow me down.



Can any of you technically inclined Jeeperz help me? Is it my fuel injection? Fuel Pump? I did check the vacuum on the PCV valve and it has suction. HELP!! I don't want to have to take it to the dealership to look at it, but it's my 'to work and back' vehicle as well as my toy. Thanks in advance. Me again. I just found some information that might have helped myself... and any others that might have a similar problem. If the O2 sensor was bad, then it's possible that the MAP sensor was bad also. Now that the O2 has been replaced, the bad MAP sensor could cause a rich mixture condition and the new O2 is trying to compensate resulting in hot rough idle accompanied by a flooded engine. Sounds good to me. I'm going to buy the MAP sensor and put it on to see if that corrects the issue. If it doesn't, please send me your suggestions. Thanks!!![addsig]

If you don't resolve the problem quickly the catalyst in the converter will fuse together and plug your exhaust. You will then be replacing the converter.

I agree that the fuel mixture is way too rich. Sounds like you are headded on the correct path. I hope it is not too expensive replacing parts. Sometimes paying the tech. for his knowledge and equipment can save you money.

This is HI_C talking. Well I got it fixed and thought I'd post the reason so that if anyone has a similar problem, I might be some help.



The mechanic told me first of all that Platinum spark plugs do not work in my 4 cyl. What? Why? Whatever. So he pulled my brand new, fouled out, $3 platinums out and put in some copper truck plugs.



The reason for Too Much Fuel was a vacuum leak at the intake manifold. Apparently one of the bolts had backed all the way out and was missing! Yikes! and the gasket was busted. They wanted 3 hours of labor at $74/hr to replace it and I said, how bout just replacing that bolt and well see what happens. He did and it sealed up the vacuum leak.... for now. I will worry about the gasket later... when I do my Inline 6 engine swap. I did have to replace the converter, but it was under warranty at Midas, so that was free, had them do the muffler too while they were under there.
