I am having problems with my AX 15 tranny on my 1995 Wrangler , 4.0 I6, Manual transmission, so I am looking for a used tranny from a salvage yard. I recently found out that the Wrangler where equipped with this tranny until 1999. Will a tranny from a 97-99 Jeep be a direct fit, or do I have to worry about switching some other part? Recomend any companies where I can get one of these? -Al

I think they may have even used it newer than that. You can use from '94 to whenever the TJ stopped using them. Be sure to use the right tranny gear oil, or you'll be replacing it again.

I hear ya. I will be sure to invest in some of that oil you recomended (was it redline?...) It is just so hard around here because there are no decent transmission shops. I am going to have to go out of town to look for a shop or just suck it up and go to the dealer and pay twice as much as any other place would charge me. Oh well, I'll just have to wait and see. My tranny problem keeps getting worse and I really do not want to be stuck with a broken Jeep. -Al

What problems are you having with your tranny? Have you tried a new fluid to see if it improves?

if you go to the right fluid, many times it will seem like you get a whole new tranny in there... when i replaced my tranny because of synchro problems, the only oil the shop had was gl-5... so i drove with that for a few days.... it had slight problems with the synchros... but when i replaced it with synchromesh fluid, it shifted like a heavenly dream

Well, a couple of months ago, I started having problems shifting into third. Everytime I wne to third, the gear would grind a little. Then, the grind started getting worse. Now I have to alsmost forse the tranny into second with an ugly grind and third still grinds, but not as bad as second.I usuallay pump the clutch a bunch of times, and it makes no difference. I was told it is the synchronizers by Bounty, J and maybe even you Snitty, but I can't find a decent shop to work on my Jeep. I went to a "transmission shop", and they had me come back a bunch of times because they didn't know if they worked on manual trannys!!??? I mean this is pretty much the biggest tranny shop in town, and they where not sure if they knew how to work on manual trannys. It wasn't even a matter of it being a Jeep. The "managers" just didn't want to take a job without each others approval. After a couple of days of coming back and talking to ALL the manager, I finally got them all to approve the inspection of the tranny. The guy tells me it is my clutch without even looking at my Jeep. After I asked him to test drive it, the guy said that the clutch was not the problem, and he didn't know what was wrong with it, but he said "we can start by replacing the clutch, and we will go from there" Needless to say, I was not convinced. I am calling the dealership today and scheduling an appintment so I can get this problem diagnosed and fixed, but I am worried that the dealer is going to be just as clueless about trannys as these guys where. I don't want to go pay a guy to tell me to simply replace my tranny! Of course that is going to be the easiest thing to do. I jwant to find out what went wrong with my tranny, and if it is a quick fix like the clutch or the slave cyl. , then I can simply just replace that stuff, but if it is in fact the synch., then I should look for a good used tranny. Let me know if you all think it is not the synch. and you recomend something else.-Al

What gear oil u using now?

Be forewarned about the stealership, they'll charge twice as much as a tranny shop, and seldom know any more about what they are doing.

VINYL FLOORING????

I'm still using the G5? oil. I didn't want to waste a high quality oil when I know that I will not have it in there for much longer anyway. I know that the oil in there is corrosive and it is not good for the tranny, but I am doing the best I can with this. I called the dealership and they will not guarantee the diagnosis, so if they are wrong, it my problem, not theirs, so I think I'll wait and see what tranny shop I can find that will diagnose my problem. I've called several shops and will charge me 1/2 as much as the dealer and they seemed to know what they where talking about.I'll be jsure to let you all know what happens-Al

yeah... i'd rather push a jeep around than take it to a dealership.... you could have gone synchromesh a long time ago... it only costs about 20 bucks to do it.. and it does improve the shift.... but i would say it is much easier and even cheaper to go with a used/new/rebuild than it is to get it repaired

I'd buy used and plan on spending about $35 to put Redline MT90 in it. I bought a high-mileage AX5 for $125 and it shifts just fine.

$125!!! MAN , I hope I can find something in that price range. I will be going out to the salvage yards later on this week to see if I can find one. I'm thinking of just swapping it out and just not bother with the old one, but we I will just wait and see. I got real lucky on that one, a friend of mine was doing a drivetrain swap so I jumped on the tranny before he even advertised it.

i got my ax-15 and a hoard of extra parts for $300 on ebay.. had to drive almost 300 miles to get it, but it was worth it

Well, I would not mind driving for a deal like that. I will keep lookling on Ebay for one. Only thing is that I really don't want to get stuck with another brocken tranny that somebody took of their Jeep. I can't wait to get a good tranny in there so I can go wheeling with confidence. Those rebuilt trannys on Ebay look tempting, but a little more than what I want to spend right now. -Al

Okay, Please tell me where I can find out if an AX15 tranny from a 98 Wrangler will work on my 95. I can get one faily cheap and I would like to take advantage of this deal(only 22,000 mi).

It will work, they are the same and both use external slave on the clutch. Reuse the YJ transfer case linkage, and use the '98 shift tower if it has the vent, the '95 may not. It would be a good time to mount a hose on this vent cap and route it up into the engine compartment, high up on the firewall.
