electric fan

got an electric fan out of a junkyard today...off a colt lol its about a foot across, do you think this will be enough to cool my engine? lemme know

I don't think a 12" fan will pull enough CFM to cool a 4.0L, they generally run warm easily. You'll want either dual 12" fans or at least a 16" single.

See any Ford Taurus' in the junkyard? They make a great fan donor.

So you are removing the clutch fan from the engine, right? I've been kicking that idea of an electric fan around since I bought my Jeep. Are there any downfalls to this mod???

Electric Fan is the way to go. Set up on a thermostat switch and or a manual over ride. Many set em up to run any time the engin is running ect... been many post in the past with all the ideas concerning this mod. This way when you hit water you can shut it off to keep from burning out your fan motor. By removeing the clutch fan you gain the HP wasted in turning the fan, That dont sound like much but all the HP you can gain is a gian in deed. All in al one good mod to be sure. my 2 cents Tug

actually... the gain from removing the clutch fan is quite impressive... i would recommend this mod to anyone... i did it at one time... but the fan failed on me and luckily i had my clutch fan still in my back end...

Yes the two 12''fans will work. I friend of mine as that set up, and he use the second fan as a back up fan. The fans camoe out of a honda i think.

2 fans? whew.......I was in front of a guy at paragon that had a fan in his ride and I kept trying to duck invisible bees all day. Those electric fans sound like a swarm of hornets.

Due to the obvious lacking in mounting space, would it be possible to mount a pusher and a puller? One on each side of the radiator? I'm starting to think about an electric fan and was wondering if anyone has tried this? Thanks!

i don't really think a pusher and a puller will do any more than just a pusher itself.... all you need to do is cool the radiator... a pusher will just push the air into the puller... it WILL do SOME better... but not like adjacent fans will... if you go with a fan at all... a pusher is always better than a puller... it doesn't have the drag from pulling air throught the radiator... it takes open air and pushes it TO the radiator

If this is true, "and it sounds good" then why do most vehicals use electric fans that pull?

I've always heard that pullers are more effecient, but nothing to back that up, just what I've always believed. Anybody have any facts on this dusty thread?

space efficiency... most vehicles have no room in front of the radiator, and would have to move the radiator toward the motor in order to put a fan in front of it... plus... many vehicles these days don't even have a grill, and use air dams... and the air space in front of the radiator is crutial... but for anything with a grill, with somewhere for air to be pulled from, a pusher fan is much more efficient... plus... we drive in the mud... when mud and grass gets caught in the radiator, it creates more resistance for a puller fan to bring the air through the radiator... a pusher can still supply air to a radiator with clogged fins... the only drawback would be the fan exposed to the elements more directly

when i speak of efficiency... i am talking about effectiveness of the traveling air, not the volume of air... a puller WILL pull more air through the radiator... because ALL of the air going through the fan MUST come from in front of the radiator, where a pusher will allow some to escape if it is not sealed well against the radiator.... but... a pusher is only about 80% as efficient as a puller... but... a pusher will push MORE air due to less drag, and that 80% is used much more effectively

I just put my second electris fan in my YJ, if you do go this route you will want a fan that BOLTS to the outer edge of the radiator. Don't get one of them autoz*ne universal fans that mount through the coils. If you do any wheeling they will rub holes in your radiator. On my Jeep there were 8 to be welded back up. the new fan works great!!!

I don't understand how a pusher can have less resistance, after all it's pushing against a restriction as opposed to the puller pulling from a restriction. Seems a toss-up to me.

I've used the universal fans with the tie mounts that go through the radiator, with no problems. I rested the puller fan on the bottom tank of the raditator to support the light fan. The fin straps then only locate the fan with no downward pull, held up fine wheelin, until the fan bearings went out.

I used a 16" universal from the zone. Next electric fan will be from a Taurus SHO, 2 speeds and good fit.
